"Christmas is best at Skansen"

Photo: Skansen Christmas market
The open-air museum Skansen is the best place to experience the swedish traditions and culture live. Christmas is of course one of the highlights of the year and I do agree with their slogan: Christmas is best at Skansen. Here are the christmas programme in short:
  • Traditional Christmas Market - handicrafts, gifts and food all around Skansen during the first three weekends in December at 11-17. Dancing games around our christmas tree at Bollnästorget and other things
  • The Spirit of Christmas - Christmas decorated farms and houses, concerst, gingerbreat-bakery, candle dipping and straw craft, Dec 1-6 Jan.
  • Lucia tradition since 1893 at Skansen. Stockholm Lucia is coronated December 1. A christmas Sing-a-long with popular swedish artists such as Nanne Grönvall, magnus Carlsson and Christer Björkman follows. Lucia is celebrated on the Lucia day, December 13.
  • Christmas exhibition on Design. Some 30 designers have interpreted the light of Christmas in the exhibition "Lysande!". Dec 1-Jan 6.
  • Ice and Fire - Celebrate winter solstice (vintersolstånd) on Soliden with fire acrobats, ice sculpturer, ice installations, dance and songs. December 22 at 12-16.
  • Dance away Christmas (julgransplundring) - Dancing games around the chrstmas tree for the last time is a Swedish tradition. Jan 6 at 12-15.

Christmas feeling in Stockholm

Stockholm is lovely at the moment. No snow yet, but the streets and the stores are filled with christmas spirit and the swedish homes are filled with candles and the smell of ginger cookies, glögg and saffron buns. Christmas markets fall into the must do category during christmas, enjoy a classical traditional christmas market at Skansen or Gamla Stan or an undtraditional one at the Arts colleges in Stockholm. Stockholm secret revealed - how we survive dark winters, part 2

image88

Photo: Nordic Light Hotel
I often get the question. How do you in stockholm survive the dark winters? One particular café surely brightens up my life in the winter. Iglo light café on Hornstullstrand on Södermalm is my favorite place to start off the day. Energy drinks, light therapy and a nice breakfast is one way. A new way is to check in at Nordic Light Hotel and try their new Light therapy - which is available in your own room. You can choose from different types of treatments;
1. Feel the light - infrared light therapy including a massage
2. Light me up - Enjoy the lightbox for an hour or two or three
3. Light Flow - Laser treatment including massage. Acupuncture without needles.

Have you ever wondered how we in Stockholm survive the long dark winters? We bring artificial light into our lives. Winters in Stockholm are not only cold and dark - they are romantic as well. I believe that Swedes use more tea-lights and candles than any other country in the world. A trip to Stockholm in the next few days will convince you. During this upcomming weekend we light up our homes with the electric cosy advent-candleholders and await the arrival of Lucia.  You will find her in almost every home singing for the family, bringing fresh coffee and saffron buns in the morning, she is seen at the office, on the underground, on television, in churches and on several other locations during the day. Stockholms own Lucia is beeing crowned at Skansen on december 1.
