Stockholm harbour in environmental collaboration

The harbours in Stockholm and Helsinki are working for a better water environment in the Baltic Sea. The two harbours already offer to take care of waste water from the cruise ships, which is still very unusual, and are now going to expand the services to electricity. In Stockholm the Finlandferries already can connect to the permanent electricity wire while docking and Helsinki is in the process to build a land line.

The people behind a new top attraction in Stockholm - the photomuseum named Fotografiska have great ambitions. I met them yesterday and became enthusiastic.

Photo needs space and its very unusual for museums of this kind to be located in the city centres. The Fotografiska (5 000 square metres) will be situated in Stora Tullhuset on Stadsgården-quay with a view of Old Town, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården islands with their own boat harbour.

Fotografiska will be an exhibition space dedicated to world class photography. Fotografiska will première as one of the foremost institutions in the world dedicated to the photographic medium

  • 4 large exhibitions every year with the best photographers in the world such as Avalon, Lebovitz and Penn etc
  • generous openinghours 10-21 every day (some days even to 22)
  • a restaurant and a bar with humane prices (stunning view)
  • a shop and a gallery where you can buy posters etc
  • courses in photography for amateurs and semi-pro
  • aditional 10 smaller exhibitions

The initators have a solid background in photo and have been behind the popular Photo fairs in Stockholm and Gothenburg plus has done solo exhibitions with photography, among them one with  David LaChapelle in 2008 in Stockholm.

The Modern Museum in Stockholm has a collection on photography and does several photo exhibitions and so does Kulturhuset. Excursion to Gripsholm Castle and Mariefred

Gripsholm Castle and park

Mariefred town with the magnificent Gripsholm Castle by the lake Mälaren is well worth an excursion. My husband and I went by car, but I do recommend to take the historical steamship Mariefred to Mariefred. Launched in 1903, it has trafficked this route ever since. You can eat lunch on board in the beautiful dining saloon. Mariefred also has a narrow-gauge historical railway. The charming town center has numerous charming restaurants, cafés, and shops offering something really nice during a daytrip.

Gripsholm is known as Gustav Vasa's castle, as it was he who built the castle here in 1537. See the Swedish State's collection of portraits - featuring prominent Swedes from the days of Gustav Vasa to present day and don't miss out on the palace theatre.

The castle is situated by the lake Mälaren

Archipelago, skärgård, l'archipel, schärengarten!!!

As Manager of Press at SVB I need to be in touch daily with tourism in Stockholm. Are there many? where are they from? what do they ask? My friends (and colleagues) at the Tourist office are experts in the field, ofcourse, and chares with me daily. They all want to go on a boat trip to the archipelago - and I totally understand them. The weather right now is sunny and warm and Stockholm shows itself from its most beautiful side.

The Archipelago Tour (2,5-3 hours) is the perfect trip if you are looking to experience the untouched nature of the archipelago in short time.

And the Thousand Island Cruise (11 hours) is perfect for a day like this, in the sun to experience the changing sceneries in the Stockholm Archipelago. Lunch, dinner and snacks are included in the price.

Here's our suggestions of islands if you want to go by yourself.

Of the beaten track - National city park cafées

Photo: Skafferiet/Allt om Stockholm

To live in a city with "real" nature around the corner is one of the blessings with living in Stockholm. I realized that when I went bicycling in the National City Park, by Bergianska Trädgården (Botanic garden), the other day. While cycling, its hard to imagine that the burstling city life is just some 5 minutes away. All you see is flowers, trees and water.

Next time Im bicycling here I will stop for a break at either Edvard Andersons conservatory and café in Bergianska Trädgården or at the idyllic Skafferiet café and restaurant at Stora Skuggan, where you can sit in the garden or on the loft next to a small zoo. Skafferiet is located on Stora Skuggans väg 38.
